| Lillerud is the Agricultural Centre of the County of Värmland. The centre is a complex organisation including general advisors, and an accounting service for farmers. The idea is to develop the countryside through education, advice and services to farmers and other small entrepreneurs.
Värmland is a small region, which means that co-operation between involved organisations, is essential for developing the county. The overhead organisation for this is the agricultural society in Värmland.
In this prospectus we would like to introduce you to one part of the centre, the educational one.
Lillerudsgymnasiet Agricultural School - a private boarding school
History In 1855 a private farm school started at Lillerud. In those days it was a practical school for farm foremen. The County council of Värmland bought the farm in 1955 after which the education became more theoretical. The County council built most of the buildings at Lillerud in the seventies, but there are still some buildings left from the end of the nineteenth century. The upper secondary school started in 1971. The pupils theory of farming and did also practise a lot. In 1993 Sweden changed the system of upper secondary school education. All the programs are now three years, following the ninth year of compulsory basic school. At Lillerud we offer the Natural Resource Use Programme.

Education All students study the Natural Resource Use Programme (NP). We have up to 100 students in each form. They all study the eight core subjects, including Swedish, English, mathematics and civics. In the first year at Lillerud biology and ecology are important subjects. In the second and the third year farming, horse breeding, care of animals and environmental control-nature conservation are the main subjects. The students have the opportunity to specialise in animal husbandry, plant production, horse breeding, game management, small scale forestry and natural sciences. About 16 weeks of the three years, the students go to farmers, trotting trainers, veterinaries, zoological gardens and so on, in order for them to get valuable work practise. | |

| Lillerud has a fairly big farm for training students. There are 240 hectares (1 hectare = 10 000 m2) of arable land and 250 hectares of woodland. We cultivate grass for cutting, meadow pasture, oats, wheat, barley, rye, oil plants and energy forest. There is also applied research into how to cultivate different kinds of plants. A normal harvest of wheat is approximately 5 500 kg per hectare and 4 000 kg of barley. At the farm there are 60 milking cows, 20 sheep, 120 sows in piglet production and we send about 2300 piglets per year to other farmers who breed pigs for slaughter. The mechanical equipment is small and therefore suitable for training students. There are 13 tractors, 3 combine harvesters and all the other necessary farm machinery.
In autumn 1997 construction of a new indoor riding arena and a stable for 25 horses were finished. All in all there are 35 horses in this and a stable for 15 trotters at Färjestad trotting arena. At the trotting stable there is also a very successful monté horse (Andy SG), which is trained and cared for everyday by students.

At Lill-skogen, the zoo Lillerudsgymnasiet runs, there are a lot of different pet animals, such as Shetland ponies, goats, pendulous belly pigs, polecats, rabbits, rats, mice, chinchillas, fishes and different kinds of birds. The zoo is situated in Mariebergsskogen, Karlstad.
